Mid-Century Modern Perfection

Is there a particular style of architecture or interior design that you adore, but that you know would never work for you and your family? Mine is mid-century modern. I love it, but with small kiddos who aren’t perfect at putting their toys away, we’d never be able to keep a minimalist space uncluttered. Maybe it’s based out of my aversion to clutter, maybe it’s a desire to streamline my life, maybe it’s my penchant for having things organized and in the right place, but the simplicity and open spaces and connection to nature of a mid-century modern home draws me in every time. Here is a fabulous example of mid-century perfection I found on houzz.com for you to enjoy.

The Kerchum Family’s Residence in the Dunbar section of Vancouver:

LEED Platinum Home contemporary exterior

The landscaping and landscape lighting give this home fabulous curb appeal!

So I’d love for the furniture to be a little more raised off the ground, but the neutral palate and pops of color are fantastic. The lack of fussy lines is relaxing. And the huge expanse of counter space on that island in the kitchen? Oh my! And double ovens!!

open living/dinning room contemporary living room

There is so much light in the master bathroom! And plenty of storage to hide away the stuff so that the space remains clutter-free and minimalist.

The dining room is perfect. It has everything you need in a dining room. Nothing more, nothing less.

Natural Balance Home Builders contemporary living room

Love the use of so much glass in this house. It makes the space feel open and airy, and it allows plenty of light into the rooms.

Floating Stairs modern staircase

I can only imagine the fabulous parties and late-night family hangouts that occur in this terrific rooftop deck. And since the home is in Vancouver, the outdoor fireplace would be a must!

Roof Top Deck modern patio

As this home is a very green home, there are many eco-friendly features. The rooftop gardens not only give color and texture to the exterior, but provide lovely views from inside the home. And since they are located on the rooftops, they would provide additional insulation to the home.

Cute Sandal Alert!

I know it’s only February and it’s way too cold for sandals, but I found these really cute ones at Target this week. I pounced on them because they will be snatched up quickly. I thought you might want to check them out, too.

I have the Merona Emeline Braided Flat Sandals in orange. I bought them last summer and wore them practically every other day. While I love the orange (and I was so surprised at how much I could wear orange sandals with), I just might have to order this darling pewter pair! They also come in gold, turquoise, white, and black. Ok, so who am I kidding? I’ll probably order the turquoise, too.

I found these Xhiliration Tennie Jeweled Flat Sandals in pewter and black. I bought the pewter, which is really more of a silver. They are very versatile and I’m sure I’ll wear them a ton this spring and summer.

The Xhiliration Taryn Flat Sandal with Flower is my favorite pair that I bought. They come in navy, khaki green, and orange. I bought them in navy. The big flower is fun and summery.

I didn’t see these Merona Eireen Wedges in the store, but I thought they looked really cute online. I love the stripe. I might have to order a pair of these!

Y’all don’t drag your feet and miss out on these. Once they’re gone, they usually don’t get them back in.

25 Things

Hello, boys and girls. I’m not sure when I became a one-post-per-week blogger instead of a one-post-per-day blogger, but it sure is good to sit down and write for a few minutes to stay in touch with you all. Since I really don’t have any big news to share with you all today, I thought it would be fun to join Shaunna’s 25 Things Linky Party. Remember my 100 Things post? Well, this is the same idea, only one-fourth the work for me! 🙂

1. We are on year #4 of homeschooling at The Hill Preparatory Academy for Girls. I never set out to homeschool for that long, but we love it more and more each year. When we one day look back over the course of our lives, the choice to homeschool will definitely be among the best choices we’ve ever made for our little posse. God has directed us into this endeavor, and He has faithfully guided every step.

2. I have almost eliminated my consumption of refined sugar. I feel like a new person. I never imagined how much sugar contributed to my feeling sleepy and lethargic ALL. THE. TIME.

3. Although I don’t watch a lot of TV, The Voice is my new favorite show. We’ve always been an American Idol family, but I like The Voice so much better. We just get to hear good singers sing without all the making fun of bad performers. Love it!

4. My house is a little too quiet right now. Almost silent. Which leads me to wonder… What are my children up to?

5. Speaking of my children, these are my favorite pictures of them.

6. When I was looking for those photos, I came across this one, which always makes me laugh.

The Peanut Gallery at my big girl’s soccer game. We’ve had a few (ahem) “reminders” not to coach from the sidelines, so the dads all stand WAY back so they can comment freely.

7. I adore the music of Indelible Grace, Selah, Travis Cottrell, and Christy Nockels. There are others as well, but these guys and gals lead me in worship every time their songs come up on my playlist. They rock the house when it comes to praising the Lord!

8. I’m currently reading about six books at the same time. I’m a literary ADHD like that. My nightstand holds Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Rabbit Hill by Robert Lawson, Slow Way Home by Michael Morris, The Gift of Rest by Joe Lieberman, The Lion, The With , and The Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis, and Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem. At some point, I will finish them all because I can’t stand to start a book and never finish it. It’s like leaving in the middle of a conversation. That would be rude.

9. I know I’ve already stated #3 above, but given the opportunity, I’d really rather watch a documentary or historical film than anything light-hearted. (Case inpoint, I’m watching “Gandhi” as I type this. Just for fun.) I’d rather take a vacation where I’ll learn something than a relaxation trip. And I don’t read a lot of “fluff” books. I read mostly biographies, histories, and classic literature. I own my nerd-ness.

10. Good food makes my heart sing. Cooking is an art form to me. I will pore over cookbooks, Pinterest, or foodie blogs for hours, on the rare occasion that I have hours to do so. I enjoy eating in great restaurants as much as I enjoy cooking. It doesn’t matter to me if it is a fine-dining establishment or a hole-in-the wall burger joint. Food is such a fabulous part of our culture, and each place has its own personality.

11. I have learned more about being Christ’s hands and feet in this world over the last few years than ever before. It is clear to me that if we don’t share the gospel of Jesus with the world, we have not lived up to our purpose for being here. Listen, I love good food, I adore a beautifully decorated home, and I enjoy fun, fabulous places. But if that’s all we’re about, then we have missed our highest calling in life. We HAVE to be about the business of sharing the gospel of Christ.

12. In light of #11, here’s what I know. We sin. And that sin separates us entirely, completely, and eternally from a God who is so holy that He can’t look upon sin. Because He knew when He created us that we’d sin, He instituted a system to pay for that sin so that we could be in relationship with Him. That system dictates that something perfect and without blemish be sacrificed as payment for our sin. For a while, that sacrifice involved the killing of animals, which were sacrificed as a payment for sin before God’s people were “clean” enough to enter the temple for worship. The problem with that was that our sins were never fully and completely covered. So God sent His perfect Son into the world to make a once-and-for-all payment for our sin. Although Jesus was fully God, He became fully man and suffered every temptation that men face, yet He remained without sin so that He could be sacrificed for our sins. When we accept that payment, when we believe that Jesus was the Redeemer for us, and that we cannot be good enough to enter God’s presence based on our own merit, then we are saved from the effects of our sin: death and eternal separation from God. There is not one thing we can do to make ourselves holy enough to be in relationship with God, and therefore we are hopeless. However, in His great mercy, He allowed Jesus to make restitution for us. We come to God under the righteousness that Jesus Christ provides, and THAT is what gives us righteousness and holiness in God’s eyes. The righteousness of Christ is what makes us heirs of God.

13. Although it is ONLY the righteousness of Christ that can save us, and not our own good works, obeying Christ and doing His work is how we show the world His love. Works don’t save us, but they do bear witness to the saving power of Christ in our lives. They identify us with the One who saves. We are the ones given the responsibility to be His hands and feet, His salt and light in the world as long as we’re here.

14. While I love homeschooling my children, I fully realize that I cannot teach them everything they need to know. That’s why we are so purposeful about keeping them involved in other activities. We dance, do gymnastics, play soccer, and are at church every time the doors are open. We constantly have friends over to play and stay on the go with field trips. We love our friends and our fun times with them!

15. I’m not afraid of taking a few calculated risks. I mean, I’m not gonna go blow our 401(k) on a hare-brained idea, but I will occasionally push the envelope in ways that surprise my friends. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn’t. But you never know until you try.

16. I’m dying to take my girls to DC this spring or summer. We’ve been studying American history this year, and I think they would learn so much on a field trip to Washington. Don’t you? Plus, I’ve never been and I want to see it, too.

17. For the last year I have been working on decluttering our home. I’ve basically thrown away a ton of junk that we’ve accumulated over twelve years of marriage. We just do not need so much stuff. I hate the idea of us being so attached to material things. So out to goes. Well, a lot of it anyway.

18. I don’t know what I’d do without Target. You know, almost anything I need I can find at Target.

19. I have always wanted to renovate an old church and live in it. Did I say that in my last 100 Things post? It’s true. I’d love to find an old white clapboard church with a beautiful stained glass and lovely hardwood floors. Maybe one day.

20. This is harder than it looks.

21. I can overanalyze things.

22. I’m introspective. Sometimes too introspective. Often it’s good to examine your motives and thoughts, but you can take it too far and never get your eyes off yourself. Then it’s just a form of pride, you know?

23. I have a laundry room full of clothes and sheets to wash. But my floors and bathrooms are clean. Hallelujah! I detest cleaning bathrooms.

24. I have spent too much time on the internet today and not enough time on the treadmill. Since this list is almost finished, I’m about to change that.

25. I’m really glad to be done with this list.

Hallways

Part of our recent remodeling job included new hardwood floors down the hallway that goes from our family room to the bedrooms. We also upgraded the terribly outdated lighting in the hall with new recessed lighting. I’ve never really viewed the hallway as a room to be decorated, but now that we have done some upgrading in that spot, I’m wondering if it could be a really cool space and not just a “connector”. Here are some inspiration photos from houzz.com that might or might nor work in my home, but I nonetheless thought they were fun.

Spanish colonial has always been my favorite architectural style, followed closely by my new-found love for mid-century modern. The ceiling is fabulous. I adore, adore the contrast of the white walls and the dark floors, the softness of the runner with the iron railing, and the clean crispness with the rustic fixtures. So perfect!

How incredibly functional is the chalkboard hallway? We’d never keep it clean and it would always look messy, so I could never pull it off. But I think it could be wonderful for busy families!

Oh, wow! The bench. The lighting fixtures. The art. The floors. The ceiling. Pretty much everything about this space is breathtaking. I could live in this space the rest of my life and be perfectly happy.

The slate floors in this hallway are very nice. So neutral and yet it has so much personality.

This one is another favorite. Love the rug. Love the light. Love the windows on BOTH sides. Love the beams. Love the natural feel.

That was fun. Do you have elements in your hallway that make it uniquely your own? Have you ever given thought to adding pizazz to your hall? I wanna know!

Green, With Envy

Green has always been my favorite color. It doesn’t matter is it’s in apparel, jewelry, or interiors, my eye is always drawn to the green. Green makes things seem fresh. It is bright and cheerful, and I guess that’s why I go back to it over and over again. Here are a few green things I’ve found lately:

Oh, how I love the pop of GREEN on this front door. LOVE!!

A GREEN cottage wall? Yep!

I loved this GREEN stained chest the minute I saw it in Pinterest. I WILL have a GREEN stained piece in my house. Soon.

I love the white subway tile in my kitchen, but if I’d gone with glass, I might have gone with GREEN.

Plates, Platters, and Whatnot

Y’all know I love a good deal, and when I find one I always want to pass it on to you all, my faithful bloggy friends. One Kings Lane has a fabulous deal today that I think is so darn cute!

You’ve probably seen these melamine plates and platters before, but the deal offered at One Kings Lane makes them a steal. The platters are $29 and the matching plates come in sets of four for $69. My personal favorite is the Navy, closely followed by the Bamboo. But you can’t lose with any of them!

The Preppy Plates Arbor Platter in Navy and the matching set of plates:

And their Mod platter and the plates:

The deal only lasts until 11/17. so don’t dilly-dally.

See, I told you you’d love them.

You’re welcome.

Bye.

A Little Teaser

We’ve been working on a little fall project around the Hill Hangout. While I’m not quite ready for a big reveal just yet, I will give you a little teaser.

I spend a lot of time in my kitchen. I love cooking, and as a homeschooling mom, the kitchen is the action center of our home. However, our kitchen has not been quite the updated happy place that I would like it to be. We bought this house with the intention of ripping all that out and updating right away. However, a decision to homeschool, add another busy child to our family mix, and a host of other more pressing ways to spend our money, and here we are five years later just getting around to it. While it’s a lovely kitchen functionally, the aesthetics are quite lacking. We have been stuck in 1981 for too long.

However, that’s about to change! Give me a few days to put some finishing touches on this baby and I’ll be ready to show her off!

Favorite Things

I’ve found several new things lately that I’ve really enjoyed having. I thought you might enjoy them as well.

1. These Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie N Oreo Fudge Brownie Bars from www.KevinAndAmanda.com:

I made them the other night for the girls, and they were a big hit. I took a few minutes to look around their site while I was there, and OH MY! There are so many yummy things that I want to try. I knew I’d like Kevin and Amanda as soon as I saw their cute little profile picture and they were both wearing Auburn shirts.

2. The burlap TOMS:

I coveted them on Pinterest the other night wished for them from afar. Then PattiGirl needed some Keen’s for school so we went to Mountain Outfitters. Lo and behold! They had the burlap TOMS in stock. And in my size. I went ahead and took it as a sign from the Lord that I should have them.

3. The Red Velvet Cheesecake Brownies from www.SweetPeasKitchen.com:

Don’t they look divine? The recipe came from a new-to-me website called Sweet Pea’s Kitchen. Just like Kevin and Amamda, there are some fabulous looking reipes on her site that I can’t wait to try. The red velvet brownies were incredible. Mine turned out a smidge cakier than I liked because my eggs were too large. Next time I need to adjust that. And there will definitely be a next time for these yummy treats. They will for sure be put into the regular dessert rotation here at the Hill Hangout.

4. This organization system for transient items from www.TheRedChairBlog.com:

I executed it a little differently in my laundry room. I used a $35 stainless steel rack from Target and some $6 fabric bins from Walmart. I can’t tell you how nice it is to have a place to put the STUFF that usually gets dumped on my desk: library books, school bags, items to be returned to a store, gifts waiting to be given, items going to the King’s Home. Hallelujah! It’s so good to get the clutter off my desk and into a proper place.

5. The Dear America Series of books for young ladies:

This series includes fictionalized diaries from young girls from different eras in history. We’ve been studying the Civil War, so we started with When Will This Cruel War Be Over? It’s the account of Emma Simpson, a young Confederate girl. After that, we moved on to A Light In The Storm, the diary of Amelia Martin who ran a lighthouse in Delaware, one of the neutral states during the Civil War. Now we’re reading the story of Clotee, a slave girl on a southern plantation during the war. It’s called A Picture of Freedom.

There you have it. Hope y’all have a good Wednesday!

Problem Solved!

Over a year and a half ago I came to you all with a really HUGE problem. Do you remember my tale of angst and woe when Williams-Sonoma discontinued my beloved Olive Oil Hand Soap? I know that you’ve all been staying awake at night wondering how to help a sister out in her time of trouble. Well, I just wanted you to know that not only is my problem solved, but it is indeed made BETTER!

The other day Jonathan and the girls and I were strolling through Target when I spotted something that required a second look.

Who knew that Caldrea makes an Olive Oil Hand Soap? But y’all, it cannot be just any Olive Oil Hand Soap. I have become an Olive Oil Hand Soap snob, and I can tell the difference between the knock-off and the real deal. I unscrewed the top in great anticipation.

Y’all.

It’s the same soap!!

No kidding, the same company must make it and package it for both Caldrea and Williams-Sonoma. And the best part? At W-S, whom I adore, I paid $17.00 for it. Target sells the Caldrea brand for $7.99. Whoop!

I knew you’d all be so happy for me. And now that you don’t have to worry about my little problem anymore, just think of how much time you can devote to solving the rest of the world’s troubles!!

Flylady and Me

Y’all know how I feel about clutter. I detest it. And yet, it seems to be everywhere.

All around.

On every surface in this house.

Closing in on me.

Okay, so maybe it’s not QUITE that bad, but there are days I feel like we bring into the house more than we throw out. And the simple math will tell you that when you bring in more than you get rid of, clutter happens. And when you get rid of more than you bring in… you have the US government!!

I kid. I kid.

Sort of.

Ahem. Anyway, I know that with the end of summer/beginning of the school year upon us, our schedule is going to be crammed. And when the schedule is crammed, the deep cleaning doesn’t happen as often as I’d like. And the clutter monster grows. And I need help.

A friend told me about Flylady. I’d been to her website before, but I’d never spent the time to figure it all out. I had tried to approach her methods as something that will tell me how to get it all done. But her message is that we need to change our habits. She takes one new habit at a time so that it isn’t overwhelming. When you have the first habit down, you move onto the next habit. After several months, you are in the habit of doing small things each day that keeps clutter and cleaning under control. Seems simple enough, right?

Since chaos in my home makes me agitated and very grouchy, I’m going to give Flylady a whirl. Step one: keep your kitchen sink clean. So here you go, Flylady…

I really hope you’re going to be my new best friend!
