Our latest read was the 1947 Newberry medal winner Miss Hickory by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey. It is sort of the back story of animal life on a farm. Miss Hickory is a twig with an acorn head. She is a handmade doll belonging to the farmer’s little girl. The story is the account of Miss Hickory’s life on the farm and her iteractions withthe other animals. It’s a nice little fantasy story for children. Not so much for adults. The illustrations, however, are magnificent pencil sketches which are so worth your attention.
