Until I picked this book up from the Newberry shelf at our local library, I had never heard of Natalie Savage Carlson. But what a delightful little book it was! It’s the story of a hobo named Armand who lives on the streets in Paris. Armand is a stoic and uncaring hobo, keeping away from other people, especially small children, lest his heart become soft towards them. That is until he comes home to his spot on the streets one night and finds it occupied by three darling homeless children who capture his attention, and ultimately his heart. It is a story about how family is truly defined, not by blood relations, but by people who love and sacrifice for each other. Mary Anneliese and I both really enjoyed this rich classic tale.
