Happy New Year, faithful readers! It’s 30 degree in my hometown today, so we’re holed up inside with the heat on. Taco Soup is simmering in the crockpot, and I thought you might like to have the recipe for homemade taco seasoning I put in it. When I used to make taco soup with packaged taco seasoning, it always tasted too salty for me. I looked around on the internet for a good homemade recipe so that I could control the salt and skip the MSG entirely. I first tried this recipe when making tacos one Sunday night. It tasted so much more authentic than the packaged mix. I regularly use it in nachos, tacos, taco soup, and Mexican dips. We really prefer it over packaged mix. The following recipe makes the equivalent of one package of seasoning. I double it for taco soup. If you make up a big batch and keep it on hand, you substitute three tablespoons of the homemade for each package of store-bought mix.
1 tablespoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon oregano
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 1/2 teaspoons cumin
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
Adjust the salt and peppers to suit your fancy.
I hope y’all enjoy this as much as we do. Let me know how it goes!
