2005: The Year of Alabama Food

2005 was delcared by the Alabama Tourism Department as the Year of Alabama Food. (I know… I’m a little late to the party in reporting this. What else is new?) As such, they produced a guide to some of Alabama’s best-loved dishes called “100 Dishes To Eat In Alabama Before You Die.” It has served as such an enlightening resource for our family. We love, love, love trying new restaurants, and we are always drawn to the local joint over the big chain restaurants. Once I found the list of favorite dishes around my home state, I knew this was my kind of project. Honey, hold on to your hat because we are eating our way through Alabama!!
Many of these fabulous dishes I have tried in the past because… well, if there’s good food around I usually know about it. But there are some dishes on the list that I have not heard about. Since the list was compiled in 2005, some of the restaurants are no longer in existence. But I am bound and determined to try every one of those that have withstood the economic downturn.
The littles and I are headed to north Alabama tomorrow on a little road trip, so I have my list in hand and will be stopping by at least two new spots from the list. I so can’t wait for this adventure!
